Cloud computing has been applied in domestic and foreign digital library research. This paper analyzed the disadvantage of hospital digital library construction in our county. A better construction mode of hospital digital library based on cloud computing is proposed; we design an architecture of hospital digital library based on cloud computing, the steps of system implementation are introduced. The prototype shows that the cloud computing can realize the resource sharing and reduce the construction cost, meanwhile, it can satisfy the needs of medical staff in most small and middle-sized hospital for digital library.
Cloud computing is still an evolving paradigm, but it has already made a huge impact in our day to day IT life. Its definitions, use cases, underlying technologies, issues and benefits will be refined in a spirited debate across the information technology industry and academia. According to the definition of NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), Cloud Computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. The current cloud computing architecture can be classified into three categories: SaaS (Software as a Service),PaaS (Platform as a Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). SaaS is a way of offering complete applications over the Internet as a service, such as Google Docs, Gmail and Salesforce.com. PaaS provides a platform for developing and deploying custom applications on it, such as Google App Engine and Microsoft Windows Azure.IaaS can provide storage resources and elastic computing resources on demand, such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3), Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), and some open source implementations such as Eucalyptus and OpenStack Arudhra Innovations Kumbakonam
We have developed the prototype implementation that was using VM ware’s solution, VM ware vSphere5.0, which offers the virtualization platform for building cloud infrastructures for hospital digital library. The implementation of system and the detail implementation is described as follows: Firstly. The implementation of data layer of cloud platform.We use technology of virtualization to turn the application and database servers of exsit hospital digital library in to virtual machines, then integrate these VMs in to cloud infrastructure.Virtualization can reduce maintenance requirements and simplify the deployment of distributed component library system. The component library retrieval contains indexing techniques, clustering techniques and sorting, etc, large-scale datasets processing and searching can be used distributed parallel method to achieve its scalability and performance requirements. The virtualization process concentrate the data resources that are distributed at several hospital digital libraries.Secondly. The implementation of service layer of cloud platform.Using Service-Oriented Architecture(SOA) and web service technology to realize the tranform and integration of the application service of existing hospital digital library. The Service-Oriented Integration(SOI), together with web service technology are used to change the business process of digital library in to web services.This provides the service layer of cloud platform with unique user management,resouce management,task management and sercurity management etc.Thirdly. The implementation of index layer of cloud platform.This is the application platform of the hospital digital library platform base on cloud computing. The core services provided to the terminal user is the services which are composition of web service with certain business logic in service layer. Thus the information retrieval service, data mining, digital reference service and other service capabilities and resources are integrated into the hospital digital library system, provides the database retrieval, library catalog retrieval, document delivery, subject service, science and technology novelty search, virtual reference service, readers information query, and other basic services.
Even between the digital libraries of top three hospitals, there is lack of mechanism in resource sharing. The digital resources of hospital libraries are independent, so the repetitive construction of them will cost a lot human and finance resources. Part of the resources of the database is also repeated. The libraries in the same area could not fully share their resources, and the repetition rate is so high that a lot of resources and money have been wasted. These problems can not be well resolved by using traditional technology and infrastructure. Cloud computing has brought a new way of thinking to the development of hospital digital libraries. Hospital digital libraries are at the threshold of embracing the concept of cloud computing because of its both technological and economic advantages.
